Coalition of Minnesota Businesses Encourages Legislature to Squeeze the Surplus
Squeeze every penny out of the surplus. Not the taxpayer.
A $2 billion surplus is serious icing on the cake. That’s Minnesota’s estimated state budget surplus over the next 30 months. With more than $35 billion available to spend in the next two years, we can go a long way toward addressing the state’s most pressing concerns in areas such as education, transportation and health care. |
|
The key is to spend smart. This healthy surplus is not a license to simply throw more money at problems or continue to pay for things that don’t work. This is an opportunity for Minnesota lawmakers to make major advances — by investing more only where more is needed, and by spending our money like it’s their own. When a family gets a raise, it usually spends part and saves part. The state should do the same. Too much spending can lead to budget deficits — and tax increases. That would squeeze the life out of the very economy that produced the surplus. And it could eventually squeeze jobs right out of the state.
Minnesota’s economy is on a roll and has a growing surplus to prove it. The Legislature should squeeze as much as it can out of this windfall. And hug the taxpayers for making it happen.
Spend smart and keep a lid on taxes.
