Dear Kathy,
Welcome to TwinWest's very first issue of In Touch! Every other Thursday, this e-newsletter will arrive in your inbox to keep you informed about key issues and projects happening around our area and beyond. Everything we cover will have one common theme: it may affect your business. Knowledge is power, and there's plenty of it coming your way, collected in this handy format.

If you'd rather not receive In Touch, please click on "update your preferences" at the bottom of this e-mail. (If you click on SafeUnsubscribe, you will permanently opt out of all e-mails from TwinWest, which we don't recommend.)

Vote on Tuesday, November 6
Vote on November 6While many voters are already focusing on the 2008 presidential, congressional and state elections, astute voters are focusing on some very important 2007 local elections just around the corner. This year, Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, and your business has much at stake at the polls.

There are many ways to gather information on local candidates. A quick call to your city hall or school district offices will get you started. Also, most city and school Web sites (see right column of this e-mail for links) offer valuable information on candidates, levy questions, and polling locations. Local and civic groups also host candidate forums, and local newspapers often provide voter guides as a resource for in-depth information.

FREE Health Care Purchasing Forum November 9
Doctor and patientMinnesota is a national leader in health care, but we're facing big challenges. Employees are faced with higher deductibles, rising premiums, and more limited benefit sets. Many companies, squeezed by double-digit increases, are being forced to drop their health care programs altogether.

If you're an employer making these tough and complex purchasing decisions, what options do you have? What are other companies doing? Are there any resources out there to help you get more value out of your health care dollars and give your employees better tools to manage their health care spending?

To help you get a handle on these issues, TwinWest and the Smart Buy Alliance are offering a free forum next Friday, November 9 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Learn more about the program and speakers here, and please let us know as soon as possible whether you plan to attend. You can register online or call the TwinWest office at 763.450.2220.
City News

NewspaperIf you're looking for a way to become more involved in your city government, volunteer opportunities on advisory boards and commissions are now available. These commissions provide citizens the ability to work with city councils on important matters facing communities. Areas of focus may include: planning, environment, transit, housing, economic development, parks and recreation, and human rights. Deadlines to apply are approaching, so please visit your city's Web site (see right column) or call your city hall for more information.

CITY UPDATES:

Golden Valley:

  • The city is negotiating with the city of St. Louis Park to create a joint powers board to govern the West End Redevelopment project with Duke Realty. More information...

Hopkins:

  • Construction on Cargill's first building at Hwy. 169 and Excelsior Blvd. is three months ahead of schedule for the anticipated April/May completion date. Upon final completion, more than 2,500 employees will work in three buildings.
  • The cities of Hopkins and Minnetonka and TwinWest continue to work with Hennepin County commissioners to secure funding for redevelopment of Shady Oak Road. We believe if it is completed as a road reconstruction without a redevelopment component, the reconstruction will result in a series of isolated, independently owned parcels, along the west side of the roadway, of very marginal commercial or other value.

Minnetonka:

  • Opus is planning to develop a 260,000 sq. ft. office building on a 14-acre site on the southeast corner of I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad. It is working on the deal with Syngenta, an international agribusiness company, which plans on relocating offices currently sited in Golden Valley.
  • The city of Minnetonka is seeking business input into its comprehensive plan update. Area business leaders are encouraged to attend an open house on Thursday, November 8, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Minnetonka Community Center (14600 Minnetonka Blvd.).

St. Louis Park:

  • The city of St. Louis Park is considering adoption of a Reinvestment Assistance Program Policy. The policy would establish criteria relating to the use of Reinvestment Assistance grants or loans from the EDA's Development Fund for private redevelopment projects as gap financing for projects not large enough to justify creation of a tax increment financing (TIF) district. Representatives from the local business community, the TwinWest Chamber and the city met to review the policy and make suggestions to city staff prior to council approval.
