August, 2010: mymn.org, a site that shares the voice of Minnesota voters with political candidates, has released the first "People's Report"video. mymn.org is a nonpartisan effort to unite Minnesotans around the shared goals of strengthening the state’s economy and maintaining the quality of life. The initiative is sponsored by the Coalition of Minnesota Businesses, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization comprised of 11 employer groups representing more than 20,000 Minnesota employers with hundreds of thousands of employees across the state.

How mymn.org works:

When you post comments in the conversations, or share your personal stories with videos and photos, you’re becoming part of mymn’s collective voice that will be shared with our elected leaders in Minnesota. mymn.org calls this the People’s Report. Click here for more information on mymn.org.

As stated on mymn.org - "Make no mistake: this won't be a one-time, dull and dusty report from some task force that sits on a shelf. This report will include exactly what Minnesotans are thinking – because we'll be using what you tell us. We’ll use your videos and photos to remind our politicians why we believe in our great state. We’ll use your comments to offer fresh thinking for some of our toughest challenges.

The point is that we all want to be heard. mymn will give you a chance to speak, and we'll make sure that somebody hears what you are saying."

roposal to overhaul the state's campaign finance rules this morning in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that threw out limits on corporate political expenditures. The four-pronged proposal is sponsored by state Rep. Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley.

The legislation would require disclosure within 48 hours of all political contributions over $5,000 by outside interest groups. It would also bolster disclosure requirements on campaign literature and commercials. In addition, the proposal would require that shareholders be notified when corporate expenditures of more than $10,000 are being made for political activities.

"The state of Minnesota is at a crossroads right now," said Mike Dean, executive director of Common Cause Minnesota, at a press conference announcing the proposal. "The upcoming election will determine what direction the state takes. If this legislature fails to act now to address the problems created by Citizens United, it will become more susceptible to the influence of special interest groups."

Winkler and other legislators have been meeting regularly with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and other business groups in hopes of coming up with compromise legislation. But so far those talks have failed to produce an agreement on campaign finance changes. In particular, according to Winkler, business interests have balked at the shareholder disclosure requirement and the 48-hour rule.  Read the full article at Politics in Minnesota here.
