City of St. Louis Park Abandons BYOB Ordinance
At their work session last Monday, the St. Louis Park City Council abandoned their recent effort to regulate bag usage in the city of St. Louis Park. The most recent version of the “Bring Your Own Bag” ordinance had retailers charging for plastic and paper bags that are now complimentary with purchases in retail stores. Citing relevance under their vision to be a leader in environmental stewardship, the city council, last year, discussed banning plastic bags altogether in the city of St. Louis Park. The initiative did not have enough council support at the time, and was set aside. The issue was brought back this summer for further discussion under an ordinance that would not ban plastic bags, but rather, have retailers charge a fee for the use of either a paper or a plastic bag. The initiative again died from lack of majority support from the council.
