I believe we have come a long way on pre-K funding, but we have a long way yet to go. Last year I signed on as a co-author for the universal pre-K bill because I don't believe universal pre-K and scholarships are mutually exclusive. However, at this time I believe our highest priority should be targeting students with the highest needs, and pre-k scholarships have a proven track record of doing just that.
However, despite our significant increase in recent investment ($104 million total) we are still only accounting for 11% of the need. If we are going to tackle the growing achievement gap in this state it starts with high quality pre-k education, and that is why I'm such a strong supporter of the pre-K scholarships program. Every child in this state deserves a great education, and because the return on investment for these scholarships is $15 for every one dollar invested, I think it's something we need to continue to fund to meet the huge need for quality pre-K education in Minnesota.
