TwinWest Chamber of Commerce supports a safe, reliable multi-modal transportation system to move people and goods efficiently through the region.
Governor Walz has proposed a whopping 70%, 20-cent per gallon gas tax increase. An increase of this magnitude would make Minnesota’s gas tax the 4th highest in the nation and 60% higher than our neighboring states. The Governor’s transportation package also increases the motor vehicle sales tax and registration fees.
We feel there are other, better sources of revenue that can be used for transportation funding. In 2017, the legislature statutorily dedicated a portion of the sales taxes from auto parts to transportation-related expenses. Securing dollars from the general fund for transportation costs is an approach TwinWest Chamber of Commerce supports. TwinWest supports capturing 100% of tax proceeds from the sales of auto parts for transportation improvements and operations. Full dedication of these sales taxes would generate about $300 million per year for transportation, the equivalent of a 10-cent gas tax increase and is just over 1% of the general fund.
