Teacher Externship Program
August 6-10, 2018
Thank you to our teachers and businesses who participated in the Teacher Externship Program this summer. 14 teachers from 5 local school districts, paired with 9 business hosts, collaborated to bring real life experiences and education back to the classroom. Teachers participated in site-visits through 4 different curriculum tracks and used those experiences to create curriculum for their classrooms. The curriculum track selections included:
- Health Care
Employers are increasingly calling for skilled workers, yet are experiencing difficulty finding talent. Additionally, employers have also identified 21st Century soft skills as essential qualities needing support. Because of these it is vital that our education system partners with area businesses so that relevant connections between classroom content and students’ future career interests can be realized.The purpose of the TwinWest Teacher Externship program was to bring career-based classroom curricula to life and to build a bridge between skills-based knowledge-based education. Through this unique professional development opportunity, West Metro Consortium high school teachers were selected to work side-by-side with an industry peer in a high demand field during a 5-day paid summer externship experience at a TwinWest partner business.
